We are excited to announce that we are participating in the 2019 Give Local 757 Giving Day on Tuesday, May 14th! We will dedicate all funds we raise through this campaign to fighting food insecurity in Chesapeake. Will you join us in our effort?
You may be surprised to learn that food insecurity is a real problem in our city. More than 26,000 Chesapeake residents are food insecure, and almost half these people don’t qualify for federal food assistance programs. For many, putting healthy food on their tables is particularly challenging.
Give Local 757 is an annual community-wide 24-hour online giving day created to encourage individual philanthropy across Hampton Roads. From 12:00 am through 11:59 pm on May 14th, anyone can “be a philanthropist for a day” by donating to their favorite local non-profits including Healthy Chesapeake at www.givelocal757.org. This year, Healthy Chesapeake will dedicate all donations we receive through this Give Local campaign to the garden Grow Box Program, run in collaboration with Virginia Cooperative Extension and Chesapeake Master Gardeners.
Through this program, free garden start-up kits—called grow boxes—are distributed to seniors and other food insecure folks at a series of Community Events throughout the city. Each kit includes a large gardening container, soil, seedlings and growing instructions for its recipient to grow their own fresh, healthy produce at home. For some Chesapeake residents, these garden kits may be their only regular source of healthy fresh produce – and once they receive the grow box, they can grow and cultivate these vegetables and herbs themselves!
Every little bit helps! Donation amounts start at $10, and every $20 received through the Give Local campaign makes a complete garden kit possible for someone in need in our community!
