Susanna Petersen grew up near the redwood forests, apple orchards, and foggy beaches of Santa Cruz county, California. After spending a student exchange year in Germany and graduating with Highest Honors from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a B.A. in Economics, Susanna moved to Washington, D.C. There, she worked for almost three years for an economic consulting firm. Susanna went on to earn both an M.A. in Economics and M.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. While a student in D. C., Susanna interned with several federal agencies. After graduating from Georgetown, she headed to New York city as a Senior Economic/Financial Analyst for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Here, she analyzed economic and policy trends in foreign countries and the U.S. After five years with the NY Fed, Susanna left to focus on her children while her active-duty Navy husband was repeatedly relocated and deployed. During these years, including three in Japan, Susanna was a community volunteer with local schools, sports teams, Girl Scout troops, and other organizations. Susanna enjoyed the frequent moves and the opportunity to learn about approaches different communities have taken to address policy challenges. Most recently, Susanna spent more than two years as a volunteer Assistant Grants Officer and Assistant Research Agreements Officer at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. There, she actively assisted with the entire process of grant applications, from initial research for funding opportunities through final submission, as well as working on MOUs and other Research Agreements. When not at Healthy Chesapeake, Susanna enjoys travelling, spending time outdoors, reading, and—especially–visiting her children now away at college. Susanna is happy to be at Healthy Chesapeake part time, focusing on both strategic development and grant writing in pursuit of making Chesapeake the healthiest community it can be.
