Michael Barber
Director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism for the City of Chesapeake
 

Prior to coming to Chesapeake, Mike worked for the City of Newport News Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism for 30 years. Much of his background in Newport News dealt with athletic and recreation program administration including special events, child care, and events for special populations. Mike’s experiences from Newport News also included indoor and outdoor facility maintenance, construction, and renovation. He was the first chairman of the local organizing committee for the AAU Junior Olympic Games held in Hampton Roads in 1998. He continued to work in that role after the regional Hampton Roads Sports Commission was formed with a full-time staff. Since coming to Chesapeake, his focus has been on improving the aging park and recreational facility infrastructure while working to expand program offerings, activities, and events.

Mike holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science degree in Physical Education/Recreation – Leisure Service Administration from Old Dominion University.
